Motorcycles in Bus Lanes
London Mayor Boris Johnson has kept one of his election campaign promises to set up a trial to allow motorcyclists to use some of London’s Bus lanes.  Subsequently the 18 month experiment started on January 5th 2009.  The thing to remember though is that this is a trial and the privilege will be reviewed at some stage.

The general consensus amongst riders and the motorcycle press is that it’s a good facility to have and it has the potential to reduce journey times and improve safety by allowing greater separation from other traffic.  It also reduces the need to filter on areas of the road where debris collects but of course also puts us where there is potential for other problems like diesel spillage and drivers turning left without looking.

Transport for London has set up an online survey where interested parties can make their feelings felt about the scheme.  It seems that some of London’s cyclists are reluctant to allow motorcyclists to share bus lanes and cycling groups such as the London Cycling Campaign have been organising campaigns against the move.   They have their own online
survey which says “Register your objections here”. You can add your voice to the survey at the tfl web site by clicking here.

The Motor Cycle Industry Association has joined forces with other organisations including the Metropolitan Police and the Despatch Association to develop a Code of Conduct for motorcyclists to follow which can be found by clicking here. It is hoped this will encourage a responsible attitude to the introduction of the trial which could of course also affect the outcome.
