When I first heard about the 270º - 180º - 90º - 180º firing interval I wondered how it could possibly work.  Obviously it does, providing superb throttle linearity and giving a feeling that the rider’s throttle hand is directly connected to the rear tyre.  The new engine feels and sounds smoother than ever, and emits an unforgettable growl from the exhaust.  With 182 PS at 12,500 rpm and 115.5 Nm of torque at 10,000 rpm, this MotoGP-inspired engine is without a doubt the most technologically advanced powerplant ever seen on a Yamaha supersport bike. And for the ultimate in feel and controllability, the new-generation R1 runs with an all-new Deltabox chassis offering an idealised rigidity balance.

The engine also features twin injectors, titanium intake valves, forged aluminium pistons, ceramic composite-plated cylinders, slipper clutch and a D-mode Map that works in association with the YCC-T.  The D-mode Map allows you to choose the performance profile that best suits the riding conditions.  Power output from the engine is the same in all modes but D-mode alters the way the power is delivered.  Standard mode is for optimum all-round performance, A mode is for sharper engine response and B mode gives a gentler response to the rider’s throttle inputs. Just push the switch on the handlebar to choose.

The new engine and chassis are complemented by uprated brakes and suspension as well as stunning new bodywork - a package that takes the new R1 to another level.  Come and see it for yourself at the launch on Friday 27th.

The new YZF-R1: ride it, believe it.
